At the beginning of this month, our Program Manager for education, Senglat Ja, gave parenting education training in 5 villages near to Taunggyi and Kyaing Tong, in Shan State.
At these trainings attended 333 people and they learnt topics as: importance of breastfeeding, healthy meals, action for good parenting and hygiene awareness about COVID-19. This program is a part of the project “Education for all” founded by PIME foundation. This one week program showed great results and has certainly been a good base for building future activities, a community based approach to the education of their children!
Generally, most villagers do not have education background and some of them do not speak Burmese, so we needed to involve some interpreters. Anyway, although they have language barrier they were learning through demonstrations, visual aids, activities, group works and discussions.
In following table you can see how many villagers attended the training from every village:
City | Name of the Village | Date | Male | Female | Children under 8 | Children above 8 | Total |
Keng Tong | 31 – mile | March, 1st | 15 | 23 | 53
Kyate Kaut | March, 8th | 25 | 21 | 17 | 68
Taunggyi | Kaung Mu Sin | March, 3rd | 75 | 79
Naung Kyin | March, 4th | 41 | 68
Bant Kwe | March, 5th | 60 | 65
Total | 56 | 216 | 44 | 17 | 333 |
Special attention has been paid to hygiene awareness, especially about COVID-19. Parents do not care much about washing hands though they knew it is important for the hygiene and their health. So, they learnt the steps of washing hands through a poem and action. They all recited it with the action and then, group by group came out and recited in front of the big group. They seemed to enjoy the activity.
Most of them didn’t knew about COVID-19 so our program manager explained the critical moment we’re living in.
All villagers believed that children learn when they are in school and not at home, so this training was crucial to explain them their crucial role in children’s education and development.
In some villages our staff was requested to help in training or directly on providing some teachers for pre-school, in one village they even propose to pay for the training or salaries, they really understand the need of a more professional approach to the education of their children.
This one week program showed great results and has certainly been a good base for building future activities, a community based approach to the education of their children!
