PROJECT

The project started up in 2016 aiming to improve life conditions of youth in the center and to facilitate their future social integration. In particular, New Humanity aims to allow children and youth a re-educational path for their future reintegration in society, strengthening operators professional competences and providing a psychological support both to detained youth and to operators of the center.

To reach this purpose, inside the juvenile center New Humanity created a primary school and we’re organizing several vocational trainings to youth close to the end of their stay at the center. Youth have also the chance to undertake a psychological path and to find a support in it.

New Humanity aims in this way to support detained youth in their re-educational path.

CONTEXT

The Juvenile center is located on the outskirts of Yangon and hosts 700 youth, both teenagers and pre-teenagers: near 70% of them have been sent by court for crimes, since robbery to even murder or others major crimes.  The rest are street children sent by other departments.

The center has no jails, armed guards or security controls, anyway it is indeed  a detention center.  Youth are split into 6 sleeping quarters: in 4 of them there youth who committed crimes, remaining 2 hosts street children or youth with other problems. Conditions at the center are really precarious: bedrooms are very tight, beds made by cement while bathrooms need to be repaired.

When we started to work at the center it wasn’t foresee any doctors or psychologist, there wasn’t any kind of school inside the center and only a minimal number of children could attend some educational activities. Thanks to a good collaboration with center’s staff and the director, much progress have been made.
