The CAPABILITIES project stems from the fusion of two project previously developed by New Humanity in Cambodia in the sector of disability: the creation of a daily welcome centre in the province of Kandal in 2001 and of two similar centres in the province of Kompong Chhnang in 2003, and the start of a project for the delivering of special assistance at home, always in 2003.

In Cambodia about 4,7% of population is affected by disability, of which more than 85% is supposed to live in rural areas. The lack of public structures and the belief, shared in rural communities, that disability is due to a divine malediction lead to the isolation of invalids, that often results in a complete abandon.

The programme has the objective to foster the social inclusion of all the disabled and their acceptance as lovable human beings, not only by their families but by the whole society.

The programme is articulated in three components:

Assistance and community based rehabilitation: provide assistance to the invalids at the welcome daily centres and at home, assuring them primary education and adequate medical care, in order to enhance their fully human development. Community based rehabilitation, fostering the collaboration of the families and of the whole community where children with disability live, is the first step towards their complete social inclusion.

Advocacy: promote the rights of disabled children both at local and national level, in order to facilitate their complete acceptance and to ensure them the access to education.

Prevention: reduce the incidence of disablement thanks to the promotion of early diagnosis of the diseases and preventing illnesses of women during the pregnancy and the occurrence of incidents during the childbirth.
