The background 

In Cambodia adult illiteracy rate is 26,4%, and it reaches the point of 42% among the women. In rural areas the picture is even worst. Statistics show that 75% of school-age population haven’t completed the primary educational cycle and the illiteracy rate is more than 50%.

The project

In the frame of BNFE Project, New Humanity organizes literacy courses for people, especially women, aged from 15 to 45 years old in the province of Kompong Chhnang.At the same time New Humanity designs life skills trainings for women. The training, which focuses in the confection of handicrafts and in tailoring, aims to im

prove the quality of life of poorest families, offering them an alternative income source.In its search for developing reading habit among children and adults, New Humanity has created a circulating library that every week visits 18 villages in the province. Animation such as story telling for the children and reading councils are provided by the librarian, in addition to the books’ loan, in order to induce children to approach to reading.
