PROJECT
This project, started up in 2008, aims to ensure a continuous and constant water provisionin rural areas we’re operating in.
The general goal is to improve life and health conditions of communities we’re working with.
For this reason we’re not only building water system, but we’re also raising awareness and organizing meetings about hygienic education and prevention in communities we’re working with, involving directly villagers as local volunteers since needs assessment until construction.
We’re also taking care about the formation of management committees, who are managing locally all new systems, granting in this way their sustainability.
CONTEXT
Myanmar is extremely rich of water sources. Nevertheless, their distribution is not efficient at all. Sources access and their usage for agricultural purpose is still lower than possibilities: only 22% of population has access to safe water sources.
In Shan State, in Myanmar, 47% of children have stunting problems, due to malnutrition and diseases due to bad hygienic conditions.
According to the 2014 census, access to water and sanitation is also very limited. Shan state is the worst among all states and regions of the country in accessing improved latrines (54.9%) and just better than the worst, Rakhine State, in the access to improved water supply (41%).
Improved sanitation can reduce diarrheal disease by more than a third, and can significantly lessen the adverse health impacts of other disorders. Investment in hygiene promotion, sanitation and water services is also among the most cost-effective ways of reducing child mortality.
