PROJECT

The project we started at the beginning of 2023 aims either to combat school drop-out which is constantly increasing in Tunisia and to provide effective activities of social and educational inclusion for children from Ettadhamen, near Tunis, and Ras Dhera, a neighbourhood of Tozeur, and also their families.

Particularly, after creating a physical safe aggregagation space to run an after school centre in Tozeur, we expand the educational offerings of the centre, by proposing sort of clubs focused on computer training, foreign languages including Italian, arts, drama, reading sessions, as well as study support and help with homework. We also organize trips to promote the sorrounding areas and to encourage the creation of strong group bonds.

The parents of the beneficiaries of the after school activities participate in regular meetings with the educational staff, facing topics such as the relationship between parents and children and the importance of education in order to reduce the spreading of negative social behaviours and school drop- outs.

Family support has a strongly positive impact on the children wellbeing, that’s the reason why the project actively includes parents.

In Etthadamen, we organize workshops for minors focused on teaching a safe and correct use of technological devices and the internet. Other than that, we propose awareness campaigns on children rights, non-violent communication and environmental protection in order to avoid the increasing of youth deviance.

context

The Tunisian school system, on a theorical basis, should be working properly; in reality, school drop-out rate is very high: it’s estimates that every year around 100.000 minors between 9 and 16 years leave school.

Poverty plays a significant role in that, as well as the increasing of physcological disorders among young people: 16,6% of minors between 5 and 17 years suffer from anxiety attacks and 4,4% suffers from depression, whistl around 1/5 of students between 13 and 15 years has problems deriving from the use of illegal substances.

The neighbourhood of Ettadhamen, in province of Tunis, is a very difficult place to live in: over half of the 150.000 inhabitants live under the poverty line and its disastrous consequences are mainly visible on young people who are involved in violent and criminal activities.

Even youths of the neighbourhood of Ras Dheraa, in the northern area of Tozeur, finds themselves in very bad conditions due to the collapse of local tourism after the pandemic and the terrostistic islamic attacks in 2020; young graduates find it very hard to have jobs and this situation negatively reflects on younger students, leading them to leave school. School drop-out in the area is around 8,7% at secondary level.

Increasing social and educational inclusion and creating safe aggregation spaces for the numerous minors of the two districts will surely lead to enhance the huge potential that young people can offer to develop their country.
